Learn how to take the best photos possible using Automatic and Semi-Automatic (Program) camera settings. Your camera will be explained in easy to understand language and exercises. You will receive assistance in the areas you require more confidence and be given advice for being more creative with your compositions. The course will combine classroom exercises with notes, slides and a Sunday morning practical session that will allow you to put your new knowledge into practice under Debra’s guidance. Suitable for the beginner who wants to improve but also keep things simple. (The local Macarthur practical location will be advised at your first session.) Debra is an experienced tutor, professional photographer and community artist; holds a BA & Masters in Photography and is a certified trainer & assessor. She is also founder and co-ordinator of macphotogroup.org. Three consecutive Monday evenings and third Sunday morning from start date. No concession.

Session 1
1. Introductions and general camera information.
2. Understanding how to obtain best image quality and resolution.
3. Focusing explained.
4. Working in Automatic and Scene modes.
5. Working with UV and polariser filters.
6. Practical exercises in classroom.

Session 2
1. Review (optional) homework exercises.
2. Study the advantages of working in semi-automatic Program mode.
3. Understanding safe hand holding techniques.
4. Exploring how to alter the sharpness of your backgrounds.
5. Explanation of ISO for sharper images.
6. Practical exercises in classroom.

Session 3
1. Review (optional) homework exercises.
2. Understanding lens and zoom perspective choices.
3. Using Exposure Compensation to avoid over or under exposed shots.
4. Tips on compostion.
5. Using natural light to create mood.
6, Practical exercises in classroom.

Session 4 Sunday Morning Practical Shoot
1. Depth of field exercises.
2. Taking portraits in difficult light and great scenery.
3. Exploring your white balance choices.
4. Getting exposure right.
5. Reviewing for highlights.
6. Experimenting with composition.

Tutor will advise details of local Macarthur location for practical shoot at 10am to 12n Sunday 5 November. (Bring camera, water, hat, sunscreen and comfortable enclosed shoes.)

About the Tutor
Debra Pearson holds a Master of Creative Arts (Photography & Visual Art Theory), a Bachelor of Arts (Photography, Art History & Aesthetics); a Graduate Certificate in Communication and a Cert. IV Training & Assessment. Debra has taught photography for over 20 years at various tertiary institutions and regional art galleries. She has run a successful photography business, as well as working as a community arts photographer and visual arts curator. Debra has produced photography for the media, corporate publications, clients & exhibitions; and currently co-ordinates the Macarthur CC Photography Exhibition Group. Materials

Bring your camera (with Program mode), camera manual (or handbook equivalent eg “Dummies” edition of your camera’s model), memory card, fully charged battery, notebook and pen. Printed notes will be distributed.
